About

Hi and welcome to our site!

I’m Steve Smith, founder of Mama’s Movers, and I appreciate you taking the time to visit our site.

A little about me.

My 40+ year professional career working in banking, accounting, office management, income tax preparation and even local ground courier, took an unexpected turn when I became full-time, live-in caregiver for my aunt in Alexandria.  As caregiver I was exposed to the world of cancer patients: dealing with doctor and hospital visits, chemotherapy, prescriptions, oxygen, insurance, updating legal documents like Power of Attorney, Will, burial plans, etc. in addition to managing her household affairs and 13 cats.

God bless those doctors, nurses and staff who deal with the sufferings of others on a full-time basis.  I had the rare privilege to meet and interact with terrific loving caring people who treated patients and their family with care, kindness, friendship, humility, love and with an abundant supply of humor, sometimes the best medicine of all.  This experience helped me develop a greater sensitivity to the fragility of the infirm which I carry over to dealing with our moving clients.

After my aunt passed, I started a moving firm with a roommate in January 2004.  That business relationship didn’t work out and we went our separate ways.  In September 2008 I started Mama’s Movers, a small firm located in Woodbridge serving Northern Virginia, handling residential and commercial moves, but specializing in transitioning seniors into Assisted Living Facilities.

Many of our clients have been adults dealing with the difficult decision of moving their loved ones into situations that offer them more care than they can provide.   It seems this is as difficult for the seniors as for their adult children and family members.

We have worked in several area Assisted Living Facilities where we dealt with some incredible people handling the various aspects of a home for many residents, caring for them with empathy and a caring attitude that is always amazing to witness.

Rubbing shoulders so often with these caring souls who are entrusted with the daily care of these seniors who are now relying on others to meet their needs reinforces my respect and admiration for the quiet stoic acceptance of life’s ups and downs seen in so many members of this generation.

Some say good help is hard to find.  I believe most people want to do a good job and will, when given the opportunity, appropriate instruction and training.  We instruct our staff on careful packing and padding methods, lifting techniques, cautious handling of furniture, physics, and geometry. However, some things such as sensitivity, empathy, respect and concern for others can’t be adequately put into words, especially when you are carrying a couch backwards down stairs.

Our human nature seems to dictate the care of those less fortunate, in weakened state, relying on the kindness of others. I am constantly awed to see our men treat our clients, their elders and belongings with care and compassion as though they were their own family members.

Why should you grant us the privilege of servicing your moving needs?

We offer a broad range of services to our clients customized to each of their needs and desires.  We treat each client and their belongings as if they were our own family, with tender loving care.
